Snapchat is a very popular aspect for a lot of people's social lives, whether they are old or young users - but this new incident indicates that maybe the app still isn’t safe for the younger users. An anonymous 14-year-old user is now suing Snapchat after he was exploring the Discover section and had spotted some inappropriate content.
Snapchat's main app offers the Discover section for users so that they can enjoy extra content such as curated videos, as well as articles from popular publishers and media outlets. Snapchat reportedly has the direct power to decide what users can view in Discover. However, one of the company's spokespersons has denies the allegations and stated that “our Discover partners have editorial independence,” and that it is “which is something that we support.”
A Discover post from BuzzFeed published on the 1st of July consisted of several Disney characters and had “perverted” captions. People above the age of 13 are officially allowed to use Snapchat. This new lawsuit points towards settings for parents of young users to block adult content, as well as warnings and notifications that come into effect when users will be viewing certain content in the Discover section. With over 150 million younger Snapchat users, it will be interesting to see what happens within the next few stages of the issue.
Do you think Snapchat should tweak their app to make it more suitable for the younger generations? Be sure to leave a comment below and don't forget to connect with any of our social media pages right now!
