Cyclist's hand signals are now being recognized by Google's self driving cars

While Tesla has been having some problems with their Autopilot self-driving system, Google's smart car system can now recognize cyclist's left and right hand signals. This comes a month after the system learned how to honk appropriately.

Google explains the system further in their recent report, saying that the autonomous cars can detect cyclist's hand signals, and use machine learning to remember their signals from previous rides. The car's sensors have a 360 degree view, and also work in the dark/at night. The system has also been programmed to distinguish between multiple types of bikes, such as tandem bikes, bikes with big wheels, unicycles, and other types.

What is probably the most important part about the report, is that according to Google, "our cars won't squeeze by when cyclists take the center of the lane, even if there's technically enough space." Which is safer than some drivers on the road today, and cyclist's should be relieved that at least Google's cars won't try to take advantage of them.
