Google's Now on Tap gets updated with some new useful features

Last year at Google I/O, Google unveiled a new useful Google Now feature called Now on Tap. The feature was cool at first, but it was limited because you could only use it with certain apps. However, Google is working on making it even more useful for users, and one of the first updates for the feature includes the option to translate text from any screen, discover new content in a new discover mode, and even quickly find out information about products by scanning barcodes and QR codes.

Starting off with the new translate feature, it does exactly what you'd expect it to, translate words or sentences in another language on any screen to the language you are fluent with. Google Chrome automatically does this, but there are other times where this could be useful. To activate this feature, use the gesture to activate Now on Tap, which is just holding the home button until the now cards come up. Once you do that, there will be a card that says "Translate this screen" press it, and watch as Google will automatically translate the whole page to your desired language. At the current time of this article being published, the translation feature will work with phones that have the language set to English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian."

Moving onto the discover mode, it brings a new button which is located where you would see shortcuts for other apps, such as Yelp, Google Maps, or Google Play. When you tap the Discover button, Google will try to show you a "stream of visual content related to what's on your screen," this could make it easier to browse around interesting topics. Things shown in the discover mode could be YouTube videos, news articles, etc.

The final new feature in the updated Now on tap is the ability to open your camera app and let it hover over an image of either a QR code or barcode, and when Now on Tap is activated, it can identify the item for you to learn more about it. For example, the barcode could be located your average everyday food or device package, and the QR code could be found on a poster advertising for an event.

The new Google Now on Tap features are available for you to try on your phone right now. Do you use Google Now on Tap, if so let us know on any of our social media pages and tell us why you do or don't use it.
