Unicode approves Google's working women emoji

Back in May, Google presented new emoji showcasing working women for the Unicode standard, and today the Unicode Technical Committee approved the request. The new emoji show 11 new positions including welding, singing, farming, and coding. They are also available in every skin tone, so the total number of new emoji rises to over 100.

What's more, Unicode is adding 33 female options to existing emoji which are male only, including a runner, haircut, police officer and many others. As you might expect, these will be available in future versions of Android as well as other mobile operating systems.

Unicode's emoji have been used by huge companies such as Google, Apple, IBM, Facebook, Microsoft and also major programming languages such as Java, XML and others as well. Unicode allows users to use emoji between any platform as long as it supports the standard.

Unicode has been criticized in the past for failing to mirror representation and inclusion in modern standards. They've responded by adding more skin tones and adding new characters for women as well as other under-represented categories.
