Google is working on a combined augmented and virtual reality headset

Google was recently rumoured to have scrapped its planning for a possible Oculus Rift rival. Now, the company is reportedly developing a high-end standalone technology headset. However, it isn't just like any normal headset, this particular one could combine both augmented reality and virtual reality in one experience.

The technology giant could be advancing into the future with a dedicated headset device that will not need a smartphone, computer, or any other additional device to operate. Engadget's report states that the headset will consist of a screen, but it could focus more more on the augmented reality involved. At the moment, it’s difficult to predict the potential appearance of the headset, but it could be on the same league as the Microsoft HoloLens rather than the Oculus Rift. Recode's report states that the original device will be created in order for the company to compete with standalone gaming headsets. Let's not forget that Google also has other hardware projects in progress.

We've seen the company introduce the Project Daydream earlier this year, which is essentially an Android-powered virtual reality platform that is based on a more modern and developed version of the successful of Google Cardboard. According to Engadget, Google's long term plans will feature more than just Android-powered technology and experiences.

What's more is that Google has previously supported Magic Leap, a start-up producing "mixed-reality" technology including a unique standalone headset. Don't be surprised that augmented reality could soon be an industry that many businesses will be entering - an example is the sky-rocketing success of Pokémon Go - consumers as well as businesses could be enjoying the future of technology very soon.
