Android platform distribution, August 2016: 15.2% or Android devices are running Marshmallow

Google's Android Platform Distribution chart has just been updated for August, and while KitKat is still leading Marshmallow has increased to 15.2%. The team that releases this information regularly shows the number of devices running a specific version of Android.

The only two versions that saw an increase since last month were Android 5.1 Lollipop and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Android 5.1 increased by 0.6% and is now on 21.4% of all Android devices. Marshmallow, however, got a bigger increase with 1.9%. Now 15.2% of Android smartphones are running the latest version of Android.

Compared to the 3.2% growth in Marshmallow last month, it's not a huge increase, but the general direction is pretty good for Google.

It's understandable that older versions of Android are starting to fade out, and the chart confirms that. The existence of Gingerbread, Ice Cream, Jelly Bean and KitKat continues to decrease.

KitKat is currently the most installed versions on 29.2% of Android smartphones, but it's only a matter of time before Lollipop and marshmallow take over. Funny enough, Android's Froyo has stayed at 0.1% since last month.

Android 7.0 Nougat is just around the corner, so we're happy to see that Marshmallow's presence is finally over the 15% point.

What version of Android are you running? Are you part of the 0.1& who still runs Froyo?
