Battery pack sales increase by 101% thanks to Pokemon Go
As you might now, Pokemon Go uses up a lot of your phone's battery, but people don't really care about it. After all, it is the most popular game in US history, and it's also making battery pack manufacturers more successful as well.
According to the NDP, battery pack sales have gone through the roof since Pokemon Go launched. Before the launch of the game, sales were only up 4% year-over-year, but that changed as soon as Pokemon Go was released. During 2 weeks after it launched, over 1.2 million portable battery banks were sold.
This number indicates a 101% increase over the same period last year (July 10-23, 2015). This is pretty impressive! The company that developed and published Pokemon Go, Niantic Labs, isn't the only company making money from the game. There have been over 100 million installs and everyone id trying to bring in benefits from this high demand product.
“Pokémon Go is the summer’s hottest game partly because it utilizes features like location, motion sensors and augmented reality in your smartphone- however, these features consume more of the phone’s battery life. As a way to compensate for the extra battery usage, consumers are buying portable power packs so they can continue to play, uninterrupted.” -Ben Arnold, executive director, industry analyst for consumer technology at The NPD Group."
Due to the game's popularity, this could most likely be a natural reaction. Ultimately, smartphones don't last long when the GPS, screen, and sensors are being used constantly. The purchase of battery packs was also popular with Ingress users, however, it wasn't as popular as Pokemon Go.
