Motorola put a lot of work along with thought into the "Moto Mods". They recently posted a blog update regarding the mods. Motorola had to be sure these "mods" not only fit right, looked right, and felt right. The phones these modifications would work with also needed to cooperate. It wasn't all about the design ether, these needed to be something that made your device better.
As Droid Life reports, the Moto Z was in some ways shaped around these modifications. Things like the position of the battery and materials used on the casing were all taken into consideration during the design process.
Developers are now going to be able to make their own Moto Mods. Droid Life makes a good point when they say there is no guarantee from Motorola that your mod will take off and be successful. It might be something fun to give a shot if you have the time in resources.
