Is the Note 7's display really weak?
Samsung's new phablet, the Galaxy Note 7 is an immaculate device. The device's screen is Gorilla Glass 5, created by the company Corning. As the name hints, the display, like Gorilla Glass displays, is supposed to be extremely strong. However according to Uber Gizmo, "JerryRigEverything" a YouTuber has recently posted a video showing the display scratching when it shouldn't.
After all the hype the video received, Corning responded. Uber Gizmo reports that "Jaymin Amin and Jon Pasansky" from Android Authority was who Corning spoke to. They had an explanation for just about everything and were not backing down when it came to defending their Gorilla Glass.
Corning claims that the glass should be strong enough to withhold from scratches under 5-6 hardness on the Mohs scale. According to Uber Gizmo, the scratch made in the video was created from an object with a hardness of a 3 on the Mohs scale. Is the scratch in JerryRigEverything's video really a scratch? Corning says no.
Corning says that when the object labeled 3 on the Mohs scale was pushed down onto the device, some of its own material was transferred over the top of the display. So maybe it really isn't a scratch, just some excess material that can be removed, but not easily. If you watched the video above, then you would've seen where Jerry tried to remove the "scratch" with a cloth. He had no luck and Corning says because it will take more to remove it, but it is possible.
Is it a scratch, some material, how do we know? It's kind of all up in the air and we might just have to choose a side to trust. Do you trust Corning? Either way you shouldn't try to do this to your device, especially after the wad of cash you put up for it.
