Oculus' VR film 'Henry' is awarded an Emmy
In the past few years, producers of virtual reality films have been ignored and not exactly recognised in the world of films. However, earlier this week, American virtual reality giant Oculus’ Story Studio, received the crown that it was searching for. The company's animated VR film, Henry, was given an Emmy award.
Oculus' VR film received the award for Outstanding Original Interactive Program. However, it isn’t the first VR candidate to be awarded an Emmy - the Sleepy Hollow VR experience was in fact the first. But you've got to hand it to Oculus for creating the first original VR short film to win an Emmy award.
The film was released last year, and directed by Ramiro Lopez Dau. It is based on the lonely life of a hedgehog who throws himself a birthday party. Quite a simple story indeed, but there's a lot more to it. With virtual reality, there is an aim for the user to have a stronger relation with the game/movie which means that the experience feels more realistic than a normal game or movie. According to Wired, "when you look at Henry in Henry, he looks back, and it’s simultaneously intense and heartbreaking."
Dau stated that, “from the start we’ve wanted to show that VR is an art form—a place that welcomes storytellers and that even at this very, very early stage it can be a powerful tool for storytelling”. Thanks to this Emmy award, there could be a sign of progress and a bright future for the virtual reality industry. Speaking of which, Oculus will be releasing an all-new project called 'Dear Angelica' later on in the year.
